Jahmyr Gibbs is one of the Detroit Lions' top weapons on offense, but you wouldn't know that from watching the teams' absolute dismantling by the Green Bay Packers in Week 1 by a final score of 27-13.
It was nearly impossible for Gibbs to find anything to work with, with the offensive line struggling to create space for him and with Jared Goff getting a ton of check down passes drawn up for himself and Gibbs all game. A 31-39 passing performance that garners just 225 yards of offense and no touchdowns shows just how much small ball Morton was going with, and none of it effective.
While the calls for Morton's immediate termination are, for lack of better words, ridiculous, it's clear he needs to correct how he's using Gibbs moving forward as the Lions careen towards another huge NFC North bout against the Chicago Bears in Week 2. This one stat, shared by ESPN's Field Yates, does a great job of showing just how bad Gibbs' usage was in this contest.
A weird receiving stat line for Jahmyr Gibbs today: 10 catches for 31 yards.

That's the fewest receiving yards in a game where a player had at least 10 catches in NFL history.
Gibbs, who ran for 1,412 yards in 2024 and had a league-leading 16 touchdowns, looked like a shell of that player against the Packers and their ridiculous run stopping. He only got 19 rushing yards on the day on nine attempts, which is exactly the sort of poor rushing that can bog down any quarterback.
Gibbs had the most receptions of any eligible receiver on the day as well, a bit of an anomaly considering that Goff had a healthy Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown at his disposal, as well as Sam LaPorta available. It was a nightmare trying to find offense for Gibbs all afternoon, so the fact that Morton kept going to him was a bit head scratching.
Moving forward, it's clear that Morton has to try and get better blocking for Gibbs if he's going to be utilizing him this often as a receiver. That only happens if Morton is able to fire up the offensive line to, as Goff put it, have "an urgency of improvement."
There's been a ton of change up front, so it's expected that there's going to be some growing pains. But, the Week 1 lashing that took place courtesy the Packers' front line should be of concern for Morton this week in team meetings.
His Week 1 performance at offensive coordinator certainly left a lot to be desired, regardless of the opponent.
