The Detroit Lions, as you might've heard by now, completely dominated the Miami Dolphins in the two teams' joint practice on Wednesday morning. The two clubs are squaring off on Saturday afternoon in a preseason bout that'll likely see no starters for Detroit, but this joint practice featured several on offense like Amon-Ra St. Brown and Penei Sewell.

The thing about that dominance, specifically at the hands of quarterback Jared Goff and his connection with St. Brown, is that we've yet to see the Lions' offense look this good in training camp. The reason for that is Detroit can only face off with the defense handed to them, and that's their own. And, the Lions' defense has made life quite difficult for the offense this offseason.

A break between the two units was obviously needed, with Detroit reportedly having one of their best practices on offense of the offseason, and with the defense continuing with business as usual against the Dolphins' thinned out offensive line and backup quarterback Zach Wilson.

Lions offense proves they haven't regressed - they're just dealing with the Lions' defense

The defense - led by Brian Branch, D.J. Reed, Terrion Arnold, Aidan Hutchinson, and Kerby Joseph mainly - has been completely shutting down the Lions' best efforts in training camp so far this offseason.

Starting tackle Taylor Decker, who returned to practice this week after fully recovering from shoulder surgery, told reporters after the Lions' joint practice wrapped up that he felt the offense had just had their best day in camp.

"It felt good. You can usually get a general vibe when you're out there. The ball screen still wasn't there, that's something we've been preaching, something we need to do better. But overall, the execution of the offense, the physicality, the finish - it seemed like it was there...we have a really good defense that we practice against. So, you know, the points are always going to be tough to come by," said Decker.

St. Brown echoed Decker's sentiments to reporters after the practice.

There's been a lot made of the Lions offense's potential for regression this offseason thanks to the departure of Ben Johnson for the Chicago Bears. It hasn't helped matters that they've struggled to find rhythm in training camp against such an elite in-house defensive unit.

The Lions won't get the luxury of facing the Dolphins every week in the regular season, but it is a great sign that they were able to completely topple Miami's weakened defense after having such a tough go of it in camp.
