The Chargers could still have a low-key position of need on their roster for the 2025 season.

Last season, Los Angeles decided to make defensive tackle Scott Matlock a two-way player, adding the role of fullback to his duties. A sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Matlock played in 12 games as a rookie exclusively at DT.

When Greg Roman was hired as offensive coordinator in 2024, he wanted to replicate the success he had during his time with the Baltimore Ravens converting Patrick Ricard, a former DT, into a FB. Ricard has gone on to become a five-time Pro Bowler.

Matlock may not have made the Pro Bowl in 2025, but he did play far more snaps at FB (361) than at DT (137). However, that appears to be changing in 2025. While speaking to the media on Monday, tight ends coach Andy Bischoff said that the team is supporting Matlock in his desire to become a Pro Bowl DT one day (H/T Daniel Popper).

"Scott wants to be a Pro Bowl D-tackle and I want to support that," Bischoff said. "We want to support that as a staff. He has visions of himself being an elite defensive player. We have visions of him helping us on offense and how that all works together.”

Bischoff didn't close the door completely on Matlock continuing to play some FB, but it seems as though it will only be on occasion. During his collegiate days at Boise State, Matlock was a two-time Second-Team All-MWC selection as a DT. In Week 8 of last year, he recorded his first career sack on New Orleans Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler.

As far as who else could step into the FB role for Los Angeles, keep your eye on undrafted free agent tight end Stevo Klotz. Bischoff has praised Klotz for his versatility, and at 6-foot-4 and 250 pounds, Klotz certainly has the size to play at FB. Playing well on special teams will also be vital in Klotz earning a role on the team.
