The Los Angeles Chargers made waves when they selected Joe Alt with the No. 5 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft—a move that sparked debate, particularly with top-tier wide receivers still on the board. One year later, the results speak for themselves: Alt not only thrived at right tackle in his rookie season, but he’s also now viewed by the Chargers as a cornerstone for the franchise’s future.

“Right now, he is one of our most ascending players,” head coach Jim Harbaugh said on the Chargers Weekly podcast. “He’s that much better, that much improved. He’s on track for a Hall of Fame-type career.”
High praise, but Alt’s performance justifies the hype. He started 16 games, posted a 94.3% pass-block win rate (fourth-best among tackles), and allowed just a 6.9% pressure rate, according to ESPN and Next Gen Stats. Per Pro Football Focus, his 97.5 pass-block efficiency ranked ninth among all tackles with at least 600 snaps—better than even teammate Rashawn Slater.
That duo—Slater on the left, Alt on the right—may be the NFL’s premier tackle pairing. The Chargers saw their potential firsthand during minicamp. “Way better, way different, way good for the Chargers when [Slater’s] here,” Harbaugh said.
Slater, entering his fifth year, also remains a central figure. The two-time Pro Bowler skipped OTAs while awaiting a contract extension but reported to mandatory minicamp. “It’s my team… I love being here,” he told reporters. While the former Northwestern star said his agent is handling negotiations, he expressed full confidence in getting a deal done.
With Justin Herbert under center, investing in elite protection is vital. Alt, now viewed as a franchise right tackle, and Slater—assuming a long-term extension is reached—could anchor one of the NFL’s most stable offensive lines for years to come.
As the Chargers reset under Harbaugh, they’ve built from the trenches. If Alt’s trajectory holds, the pick once questioned may end up being one of the franchise’s defining decisions of the decade.
