Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams opened their 2026 NFL preseason with a 20-12 victory over Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. Absent typical starters such as quarterbacks Matthew Stafford and Patrick Mahomes, Los Angeles rolled out the No. 13 overall pick from the 2026 NFL Draft, Ty Simpson, while Kansas City featured seventh-round pick (No. 249 overall) Garrett Nussmeier.
After McVay and the Rams traded defensive end Jared Verse and future draft picks for star defensive tackle Myles Garrett on June 1, speculation grew about the possibility of franchise legend and future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald returning to play and pairing up with the reigning Defensive Player of the Year.
Donald only fueled speculation when he worked out with Los Angeles in August, and as the 2026 NFL regular season draws closer, Los Angeles made a move to further the narrative.
On Sunday, ESPN and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that Donald once again tried out for the Rams. Although coach McVay has kept the possibility of the three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year (2017, 2018, 2020) returning close to the vest, one could argue that actions speak louder than words in this situation.
Donald was selected by the Rams back when they were the St. Louis Rams with the No. 13 overall pick in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft. The 35-year-old spent his entire career with the Rams, moving with the franchise to Los Angeles for the 2016 season. The Pennsylvania native was a key contributor in the 23-20 Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in 2022.
The eight-time first-team All-Pro revolutionized the defensive tackle position in football, creating immense pressure that is normally reserved for outside edge rushers. The Penn Hills High School graduate led the NFL in sacks with 20.5 in 2018 and ended his career with 111 sacks, 24 forced fumbles and 21 passes deflected.
"Once again," wrote Rapoport on X. "Future Hall of Fame DT Aaron Donald tried out for the #Rams."
