Former Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus could be close to securing a job for the 2025 NFL season.
Eberflus coached the Bears from 2022-2024, owning a 14-32 record during that stretch. He was fired after a really disappointing loss to the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day. Despite his shortcomings in Chicago, he's been considered an intriguing option for teams in need of a defensive coordinator.
Initially, the Cincinnati Bengals showed interest in Eberflus. He was then mentioned as an option for the Atlanta Falcons. Although he missed out on both opportunities, it sounds like his patience is about to pay off.
According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Dallas Cowboys are strongly considering Eberflus for their defensive coordinator vacancy. He's considered a "prime candidate" for the job.
Eberflus would be a great fit for Dallas considering he worked there from 2011-2017. There wouldn't be any concerns about him adjusting to how "America's Team" runs things.
During his first five seasons with the Cowboys, Eberflus was their linebackers coach. In 2016, they added defensive passing game coordinator to his list of responsibilities. He returned the favor by helping Dallas field the No. 5 ranked scoring defense that season.
Eberflus' success landed him a defensive coordinator gig with the Indianapolis Colts. During his final season in Indy, he led the ninth ranked scoring defense in the NFL.
Sure, Eberflus' tenure with the Bears crashed and burned after just two full seasons. At the end of the day though, he's an excellent defensive play-caller who would bring a ton of experience to Brian Schottenheimer's staff.
We'll see if the Cowboys can get a deal done with Eberflus before the end of the weekend.
