Matt LaFleur confirms suspicion about Packers wide receiver who continues to prove he deserves far more respect in 2025

The Green Bay Packers have some questions to answer at wide receiver. After all, guys like Christian Watson and Romeo Doubs are entering the final year of their deals, and since the Packers took two wide receivers in the first three rounds of the draft, it's fair to wonder what the future holds for those veterans. But that doesn't mean, by any means, that they are not useful players and positive contributors for the team.

On Thursday, head coach Matt LaFleur was clear: The team will not cut Romeo Doubs. That never made sense anyway, but especially considering how many injuries the Packers have handled at the position. Moreover, Doubs was a starter throughout training camp, playing over Jayden Reed—and that's because Doubs plays in 12 personnel as well.

At this point, even a trade—that could have been more realistic earlier this year—seems completely out of the table.

"Rome, I'd be very shocked if he ever was going anywhere. No, that will not happen," LaFleur said on the 'Up and Adams Show.' "Rome is out there competing, doing everything that we need to see from him. And obviously he's played a lot of ball for us, and at a high level. He's been a great teammate, he goes out there, and you can count on him."

The Packers have five players as roster locks at the wide receiver position, and Romeo Doubs is one of them. The others are Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and Savion Williams. Most likely, Malik Heath and Mecole Hardman are fighting for the sixth spot, and LaFleur admitted he's somewhat concerned with the injuries. The preseason finale against the Seattle Seahawks will help Green Bay to make the final calls.

"We don't have a lot of depth right now, we're missing a lot of guys," LaFleur half-jokingly said. "It's going to come out to these guys' ability to go in there and make plays for us. There's been a lot of tape, we've had a lot of pract ices now. Looking forward to the third preseason game to put those guys in these types of situations to see how they respond."

Future in Green Bay

A fourth-round pick in 2022, Romeo Doubs has been a solid if unspectacular player for the Packers. This year is the last one of his deal, and he's making $3.406 million in base salary due to the Proven Performance Escalator.

It's fair to question if Doubs will be in Green Bay beyond 2025, because the market is fluid and a contract extension hasn't been reached. But he is going to be a Packer this year, and there's little to no reason to think otherwise at this point.
