Matthew Golden has a Massive Opportunity

When Matthew Golden was drafted, the entire Packers organization was buzzing with excitement. Golden is the first wide receiver drafted by the Packers in the first round of the draft since 2002.

However, there seemed to be one major problem with the receiving room. There are too many players to keep on the field. It looks like Brian Gutekunst agreed with this sentiment. Now, two solid receivers for the Packers have moved on to other teams.

Romeo Doubs ended up signing with the Patriots. Meanwhile, Dontayvion Wicks ended up traded to the Philadelphia Eagles over the weekend.

This leaves an opportunity ahead for Matthew Golden, as he has the chance to distinguish himself as a top receiver in the league. With two less players on the field, the time is now for Golden to shine.

Matthew Golden: Limited Opportunity in 2025

Matthew Golden’s rookie season was underwhelming. However, it wasn’t mainly the fault of Golden. The offensive staff did not get him involved nor utilized his skillset correctly.

This left Packers fans frustrated. There are many receivers on the team. Nevertheless, the expectation to get Golden more involved was not a crazy request.

Golden finished the season with only one touchdown, coming in the postseason. He also only had 361 receiving yards. The lack of use is truly malpractice on the offensive staff. He is far too talented to receive a limited role.

The only way a rookie can learn is to have a chance to gain the experience. This comes with making mistakes, but it also comes with learning how to avoid them.

If the Packers choose to play to his skill set instead of forcing him into the offense on their terms, we could expect a massive season from Golden.

The receiving room is currently compiled of Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, Jayden Reed, Savion Williams and Skyy Moore, with the occasional splash of Bo Melton. Moore will likely be strictly focusing on returning kicks and punts.

Christian Watson and Jayden Reed should be the number one and two receiving options, while Savion Williams will continue to be a gadget piece. The Packers will most likely address this position by adding a rookie in the draft.

This leaves Matthew Golden looking to find his place in the offense. If the Packers play their cards right, Golden will become a star and ready to show off exactly why he is a first-round receiver.
