Miami Dolphins Claim TE Jeremiah Franklin Off Waivers

The Miami Dolphins continue to reshape their roster as training camp rolls on, claiming tight end Jeremiah Franklin off waivers from the New England Patriots.

With the Dolphins’ current starting tight end, Greg Dulcich, missing most of the training camp practices in the first week, the Dolphins look to add more depth to their tight end room.

A Familiar Face for Jeff Hafley

One of the most intriguing aspects of this signing is Franklin’s connection to Jeff Hafley.

Franklin played his college football at Boston College, where Hafley served as head coach.

That familiarity gives Miami’s coaching staff valuable insight into Franklin’s work ethic, football IQ, and ability to fit within the culture Hafley is trying to establish.

While Franklin didn’t spend much time in New England after signing as an undrafted rookie free agent, Hafley has already seen what he can do in practice and games dating back to their time together in college.

Franklin’s College Production

At Boston College, Franklin developed into a reliable receiving tight end. Over 44 career games, he totaled:

93 receptions

1,010 receiving yards

6 touchdowns

Those numbers don’t necessarily jump off the page, but they demonstrate consistency and durability while playing in a competitive ACC.

Franklin showed dependable hands, an ability to work the middle of the field, and enough athleticism to become a security blanket for his quarterbacks.

Competition Will Be Fierce

The Dolphins’ tight end room features several players battling for roster spots, making Franklin’s arrival another layer of competition.

Every practice rep and preseason snap becomes increasingly important as coaches evaluate who best fits the offense and contributes on special teams.

Ben Sims has been an early standout in camp, as well as rookie third-round draft pick Will Kacmarek.

Rookie Seydou Traore has also turned heads in camp with some WOW catches as well.

With no word on how serious (or not serious) the Dulcich injury is or how long he will be out, Franklin probably should be shooting for a practice squad spot at this time, but if he balls out over the next three weeks he could make this roster.
