The Miami Dolphins' safety position is one that's largely unknown, at least behind defensive superstar Minkah Fitzpatrick, whom the team had a reunion with last month in a mega-trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers that sent Jonnu Smith and Jalen Ramsey to the Steel City.
The rest of the group behind the Dolphins' 2018 first round pick? One giant question mark. And that bit of punctuation got even larger on Tuesday at the Dolphins' training camp.
According to multiple outlets in attendance, safety Ashtyn Davis suffered a lower leg injury that saw him
Everyone is giving Ashtyn Davis their condolences. Anthony Weaver has his hand on his shoulder.

I don’t want to speculate, but the level of frustration is not good.
He’s limping off now and getting hugs from Tua. https://t.co/ZKm1HdcsWe
With Ashtyn Davis on crutches and wearing a boot, Dolphins now without No. 2 safety and No. 3 safety, though Iffy hasn't been portrayed as longterm injury. Trader remains out at least another week. So Elijah Campbell, McMorris, John Saunders Jr. behind Minkah at safety

Davis was added in free agency this offseason on an affordable one-year deal, but it was still an important signing. While he hasn't logged a ton of starts in the league compared to the number of appearances he's made (22 starts in 69 career games), he's an experienced option who brings splash play ability on the back end, something Miami has been lacking. He had two interceptions of Tyler Huntley in last year's 32-20 Jets win over the Dolphins.
The Dolphins' other free agent safety signing, former Detroit Lion Ifeatu Melifonwu, has a long history of injuries during his four seasons and is already on the non-football injury list in training camp, which is obviously not a good sign for his durability this season.
That makes the Elijah Campbell re-signing a crucial one. Behind him? 2024 sixth-round pick Patrick McMorris, rookie Dante Trader, Jr., Jordan Colbert, and rookie UDFA John Saunders, Jr. come into the picture for important depth roles. Not ideal.
We'll find out more as far as Davis's status when Mike McDaniel addresses the media next, but until then, it's hold your breath time for an underrated and important part of the Dolphins' 2025 defense.
