The Dallas Cowboys. America’s team for better or worse. And right now? It is looking worse. The Micah Parsons contract situation is spiraling faster than a spin move, leaving fans, analysts, and probably Parsons himself wondering where things went so wrong. What led to such a bad situation?
When you’ve got Micah Parsons, arguably the most electrifying defensive player in the NFL, you’d think locking him down would be priority number one for Jerry Jones and Co. But apparently not. Despite Parsons’ critical role in anchoring the Cowboys’ defense, contract talks have become messy.
According to Adam Schefter, things are “further apart now” than they were in March. Yes, March. As in five months ago. For context, that is an eternity in NFL contract negotiations. At this point, they might as well be communicating via carrier pigeon.
The latest insider tea comes from Dan Graziano on ESPN’s Get Up! He added his voice to the growing choir of pessimism, casting doubt on whether a deal will be done before the Cowboys face the Eagles in Week 1. “I believe Micah Parsons will be a Cowboy for a long time,” Graziano said. “I don’t know for a fact that this contract gets done before the opening week of this season.” Cowboys fans might want to start practicing their deep breathing techniques.
Short answer? Probably. Long answer? Absolutely. This isn’t the first time the Cowboys have dragged their feet in contract negotiations. Remember Dak Prescott? That entire saga dragged on like a season finale cliffhanger that no one wanted. And now, seemingly unable to learn from history, Jerry and Stephen Jones are letting things get personal with Parsons.
Parsons has been a stand-up guy throughout this process. Unlike some players who skip everything short of mandatory events, he has shown up for minicamp and training camp. But here is the kicker. Parsons has not made any promises about suiting up for the regular season without a new deal. And honestly? Can you blame him? The guy is playing chess while the Cowboys seem stuck trying to figure out checkers.
Parsons isn’t just any player. He is the one that opposing offenses scheme against, coaches rave about, and fans flock to AT&T Stadium to see. Defensive anchors like him don’t just grow on trees or fall into your lap at the draft.
With each passing day, the risk grows. The risk of Parsons questioning his loyalty. The risk of souring his relationship with the front office. The risk of this deal taking a toxic turn where nobody wins. Who suffers the most if this situation implodes? It is the Cowboys. If they lose Parsons, they are essentially handing the NFC East to the Eagles on a silver platter.
Jerry and Stephen Jones have always had a flair for the dramatic, but this is not the kind of storyline you want heading into the season. Cowboys fans deserve better. Parsons deserves way better. And if the organization doesn’t get this handled soon, it is going to cast a shadow over what could otherwise be a promising season. Parsons has done everything right so far. He has shown up, put in the work, and stayed professional under circumstances that would frustrate the best of us. Now it’s time for Jerry and the Cowboys’ brass to do their part.
