Few (if any) imagined a worse New York football stretch than what the city experienced in the 1970s, yet here we are. (And no, Buffalo Bills fans, you do not count.)
One man who experienced the pathetic landscape of yesteryear—who can compare it to the New York Jets and Giants’ futility today—is the Sports Pope, himself, Mike Francesa. As per usual, the WFAN legend and one-half of the best sports radio show in history, “Mike and the Mad Dog,” put his best foot forward as the master New York football therapist following the latest disastrous weekend.
“We’re starting to reference (Rich) Kotite,” Francesa said on his BetRivers’ Podcast aptly named the Mike Francesa Podcast. “Does Aaron Glenn realize what we are bumping into, what we are approaching when you start [bringing] up Kotite and the Kotite Jets? That’s how bad this has become.
“They’re actually not worth any more words. They just stink to high heavens.”

Glenn, 53, is now 0-5 in his first season as Jets head coach. Sunday’s pitiful 37-22 home loss to the Dallas Cowboys stamped the green New York football team as the NFL’s lone winless franchise—following the New Orleans Saints’ and Tennessee Titans’ respective Week 5 victories.
Although it does not need to be said around these parts, the Jets have not made the playoffs since the 2010 season. Worse yet, their only winning season since then occurred a decade ago, when the Ryan Fitzpatrick-led 2015 squad finished 10-6.
For the Giants, other than Brian Daboll’s rookie head-coaching campaign in 2022—when a man named Wink Martindale did tremendous things defensively—much of the same shame has been written in ink. The Jints have qualified for the tournament just twice (2016 and 2022) and have enjoyed just three winning seasons (2012, 2016, and 2022), since their Super Bowl title in 2011 (January 2012).
Speaking of those now-1-4 Saints, take a wild guess at who they defeated this past weekend?
When it comes to Francesa, guessing isn’t necessary (of course). Instead, it’s all about delivering an old-school monologue via audio therapy for many who remember the nostalgic afternoon drivetime vibes of years past.
“One team’s 0-5, and the other is probably on its way to 1-11 or 2-10, and that’s the one with some hope right now,” Francesa said of the Jets and Giants. “The other one’s 0-5, going on 0-6, and looking like it’s not too long before the players, who are listening to the rants of the head coach, and watching him cut players when they fumble the ball … . You know what? We’re going to ask soon, ‘What do we do to the coaches who are not doing their jobs right?
“He (Glenn) has a big hand in why this team is dreadful, and it is nothing short of dreadful. New York football is nothing short of unwatchable, and we haven’t even hit Columbus Day.”
The 0-5 New York Jets turn their attention to the Denver Broncos for a date in London , whereas the 1-4 New York Giants host the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday night.
