On Saturday, it was announced that former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy had landed the top job with his hometown team, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
While the Steeler faithful weren’t too happy with the hiring, it is a huge moment for the Pittsburgh native and long-revered coach.
McCarthy’s opening press conference will begin today, but as the celebration and work kick off there, the Cowboys are likely going to be cringing until his new staff with the Steelers is assembled and complete.
Why? Well, let’s not forget, McCarthy was in the building for Dallas just over a year ago, and some of his staff lingered on Brian Schottenheimer’s. Now, those guys may have a chance to leave Dallas to reconnect with their original boss in Pittsburgh.
We’ve already seen one interview request come in, and I think we may see another before this transition to the Steelers is all said and done for McCarthy.
First, Cowboys tight end coach and longtime McCarthy assistant, Lunda Wells, will be interviewing with Pittsburgh to fill their offensive coordinator position.
Now, if you’re a more casual Dallas fan, or a member of the Steele Curtain, you may be saying, “Who in the world is Lunda Wells?” The answer is pretty favorable for Pittsburgh, and painful for the Cowboys if he does leave.
Wells, 42, is incredibly well respected around the league and has done a great job with Dallas since he joined the organization in 2020. He also interviewed with the Commanders for their offensive coordinator position earlier this month.
Lunda Wells is as good as it gets. Would be a great hire for Mike McCarthy, especially if he is the one looking to call plays and not his offensive coordinator.

If McCarthy can sway Wells to Pittsburgh with a big promotion, it would leave a big hole on the Cowboys’ coaching staff.
The second guy, while lesser known and not yet tied to the Steelers coaching search, could soon become a candidate for both them and the Miami Dolphins.
Steve Shimko, the current Cowboys quarterback coach under Schottenheimer and offensive assistant under McCarthy in 2024, may catch his old coach’s eye after Dak Prescott’s phenomenal 2025 season under his guidance.
The one potential fly in the ointment there could be the aforementioned Dolphins, who recently hired former Packers DC and Boston College HC Jeff Hafley to lead their team. Up at BC, Shimko was Hafley’s offensive coordinator and QB coach.
Cowboys fans need to watch both of these names as the McCarthy era begins in Pittsburgh.
