Just hours after being fired by the Miami Dolphins, offensive-minded coach Mike McDaniel emerged as a serious candidate for another NFL team's job opening.
McDaniel was the head coach of the Dolphins from 2022-2025. The franchise went 35-33 under his command and reached the playoffs in each of his first two seasons. His offense was first in the NFL in total yards per game in 2023, but that same unit was ranked in the bottom half of the league this season.
The Dolphins previously said McDaniel would be part of their search for a new general manager. Clearly, those plans changed.
"After careful evaluation and extensive discussions since the season ended, I have made the decision that our organization is in need of comprehensive change," Dolphins owner Stephen Ross said in a statement. "I love Mike and want to thank him for his hard work, commitment, and the energy he brought to our organization. Mike is an incredibly creative football mind whose passion for the game and his players was evident every day. I wish him and his family the best moving forward."
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the Detroit Lions reached out to McDaniel about their vacant offensive coordinator position shortly after he was fired.
Although a deal isn't in the works yet, it's fair to say McDaniel will be a hot commodity this offseason.
The Lions fired offensive coordinator John Morton shortly after their 2025 season ended. He had large shoes to fill considering he replaced Ben Johnson.
Detroit's offense struggled under Morton's command, which is why Dan Campbell took over the offensive play-calling duties in Week 10.
McDaniel's run with the Dolphins didn't end on great terms, but it's pretty evident NFL teams value his scheme. If he takes his talents to Detroit, he'll have plenty of firepower to work with.
