Roman Wilson has yet to be a contributor on the Pittsburgh Steelers' offense. Playing in just six percent of the team's offensive snaps against the Minnesota Vikings, it appeared that Wilson was actually going backwards in terms of his usage.
But then came the injury to Calvin Austin III. The Steelers' WR No. 2 escaped a serious shoulder injury but he may be out for a week or two as he recovers. So there are two options for the Steelers: swing a big trade, or use what you have at your disposal.
Right now, the Steelers are content with going in the latter direction, and it could finally mean the emergence of Roman Wilson.
"You know, it's not necessarily about pulling from people that aren't here. It's about the elevation of roles of guys like Roman Wilson and Scotty Miller," said Mike Tomlin during his weekly presser via the team's Steelers YouTube channel. "And so I'm excited about watching those guys work and maybe get some elevated participation. I think that's one of the beautiful things of the journey that is the season you gonna get faced with some challenges as a collective one man's misfortune is another man's opportunity."
Wilson has played an average of just 19 percent of the Steelers’ offensive snaps through the first month of the season. He has out-snapped Ben Skowronek and Scotty Miller in total, but he is almost always in on run plays or to block on screens. He has been targeted just twice and has only one reception for seven yards. The only catch of his two-year career thus far.
Roman Wilson was on the field for just ONE passing snap (4 total snaps) in Week 4... and it was a designed WR screen to DK Metcalf.

Maybe Wilson is good and maybe he isn't... but it's hard to make an impact when you're not part of the game plan. #Steelers pic.twitter.com/lZoBTX3GGn
Yet, the Steelers remain optimistic about Wilson and his future. League sources tell A to Z Sports that Wilson is held in high regard by the team, and they are treating this year as his rookie year after an injury-riddled inaugural campaign. He was attempting to jump on a moving train last season, to use a Tomlinism.
"His lack of participation might not mean anything relative to his performance or what's going on in his position," added Tomlin on Wilson. It might just mean how we choose to deploy our personnel groups through the first month of the season. So it's still very early in this process. We got 13 straight games ahead of us. So keep watching."
