The Vikings’ 2026 quarterback options point toward a clear organizational pivot. Per NFL insider Diana Russini, Minnesota plans to pursue a veteran quarterback rather than fully committing to J.J. McCarthy as the long-term answer. That direction suggests internal hesitation about McCarthy leading a roster built to win immediately.
McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, showed flashes but failed to establish consistency. He also struggled to stay healthy all season and finished with just 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Minnesota did not build this roster for patience. With elite skill players and playoff expectations, the front office appears focused on maximizing the current window rather than waiting on development.
Aaron Rodgers sits at the top of the veteran market. If Rodgers does not re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers and decides to keep playing, Minnesota represents one of the most attractive destinations. The Vikings offer elite offensive weapons, a stable structure, and strong play design under Kevin O’Connell. Rodgers played efficient football in Pittsburgh despite conservative play-calling, limited receiver depth, and minimal use of the middle of the field. Minnesota would give him more freedom and far better supporting talent.
Daniel Jones also fits the profile Minnesota may target. Before suffering a torn Achilles, Jones delivered one of the most efficient stretches of his career with the Indianapolis Colts in 2025. He threw 19 touchdowns against eight interceptions and kept the offense competitive. Health remains the primary concern, but when healthy, Jones has shown he can operate efficiently with good coaching.
Joe Flacco offers a short-term veteran solution. While he lacks mobility, Flacco still shows comfort in the pocket and strong timing as a passer. Flacco had 13 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions in 6 starts with the Cincinnati Bengals this past season. Minnesota would not need him to extend plays. The offense would simply require steady distribution to Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and T.J. Hockenson.
Mac Jones emerged as a reliable option when Brock Purdy missed time in San Francisco this season. Jones started eight games, went 5–3, and threw 13 touchdowns with only six interceptions. He operated the offense efficiently and consistently moved the ball. Although the 49ers mentioned they didn’t want to move him, a clear starting opportunity elsewhere could make a trade realistic.
A reunion with Kirk Cousins remains possible! Cousins played the best football of his career in Minnesota, where he had multiple 30-plus touchdown seasons. He knows the offense and coaching staff well. Cousins started eight games for Atlanta in 2025 and finished with 10 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. While he sits on the downside of his career, familiarity and system knowledge make him a logical fallback option if finances align in a potential trade.
Jacoby Brissett also deserves consideration. He quietly delivered a productive season with the Arizona Cardinals, throwing 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions despite the team’s struggles. He played aggressively and confidently, helping Trey McBride and Michael Wilson reach career-highs in yards and touchdowns. Brissett has shown he can command an offense and push the ball without hesitation.
The Vikings’ 2026 quarterback options may not scream long-term upside, but they offer experience and control. A veteran quarterback could stabilize the position, maximize a loaded roster, and keep Minnesota firmly in the playoff race next season.
