The Minnesota Vikings have suspended defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander for three weeks following his guilty plea in a driving while intoxicated case.
The team announced the suspension on Tuesday. Alexander said he was guilty earlier this month for an event that happened back in April.
His suspension started July 24 and runs through August 13, so it won’t impact the Vikings’ regular season.
The team explained their decision in a letter, saying they kept in close touch with the NFL while the court handled the entire legal issue.
“Following Gerald’s arrest earlier this spring, we remained in communication with the NFL while awaiting the outcome of the legal process,” the Vikings said.
The team also explained why it chose the three-week suspension, “We take these situations seriously and believe this disciplinary action is appropriate.”
Alexander responded through a statement released by the Vikings. He accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged the consequences.
“I take full responsibility for the situation I put myself in and apologize for not meeting the mark,” Alexander said.
“I know it’s unacceptable. I understand the suspension and am committed to learning from the matter and ensuring I come back a better version of myself.”
The suspension comes only weeks before the Vikings continue preparations for the upcoming NFL season. But the time frame allows him to return before the regular season begins.
Alexander joined Minnesota during the offseason. His hiring reunited him with Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
The two coaches already share a working history. They were on the same staff with the Miami Dolphins and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Vikings have not announced any additional disciplinary measures. Right now, they feel a three-week ban is the best way to handle it.
Alexander will remain away from team duties until Aug. 13. After that, he can return and resume his role as the Vikings’ defensive backs coach as the team shifts its focus toward the start of the regular season.
