Mock Trade Lands Dolphins Super Bowl Winning Tight End
Mandatory Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

A few days ago, it was reported that the Miami Dolphins have engaged with the Pittsburgh Steelers in trade talks surrounding tight end Jonu Smith. With a potential deal being in the works, the Dolphins are going to have to find a replacement tight end to fill Smith's production. With limited tight end options in the free agency market, the Dolphins would likely have to pursue a trade to find another tight end.

Looking around the league, there has been one name that has been in some trade talks, and it is rumored his team may not be able to afford to keep him. That player is Dallas Goedert of the Philadelphia Eagles. Goedert, who is 30, was a big part of the Eagles' offensive success en route to the Super Bowl.

He started in all ten games he played in, and he recorded 42 receptions for 496 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 17 catches for 215 yards and two touchdowns in the playoffs. He is a big 6'5 256-pound receiving threat that can also set some blocks in the run game.

He would be a valuable asset to Miami and their prolific passing game. With his age and injury history, he would be a realistic target that the Dolphins would not have to give up an abundance of assets for.

The trade would be Dallas Goedert and a seventh-round pick for Malik Washington and a fourth-round pick. The Eagles would be swapping an older tight end and a late-round pick for a 24-year-old receiver and a three-round jump.

Malik Washington had a very solid rookie season in a Dolphins offense that struggled and went through multiple different quarterbacks. Washington had 16 catches for 223 yards and five rushes for 25 yards and a rushing touchdown. He is a speedy and elusive receiver who knows how to make plays with the ball in his hands.

Outside of the Eagles' two main receiving threats, Devonta Smith and A.J. Brown, their receiving room is very weak. Washington would add a young, speedy receiver who could end up being their starting slot receiver with a good training camp. Jahan Dotson and Terrace Marshall Jr. are some other receiving options for the Eagles, but the room needs another weapon, and Washington could be the answer.

The Eagles may seem like they are at a deficit at tight end, but they should be just fine without Goedert. They have Grant Calcaterra, who has gotten better every year of his three-year career. After sitting behind Goedert for some years and now being accustomed to the offense, he could be the perfect person to take the keys to the offense. He had 24 catches for 298 yards and a touchdown with a small role in the offense, and with a bigger role, he could be due for a breakout season.

The Eagles could also look at another position group to find their answer. 6'6 228-pound Johnny Wilson is a second-year receiver out of FSU. He struggled a bit at wide receiver in his first season, but with his size and frame, he may find his stride trying to play tight end. They could try him out there during OTAs and training camp and see if he could be their next starting tight end.

He had five catches for 38 yards and a touchdown in his rookie year, but he has the size and potential to be a good pass-catching threat as a receiver or a tight end. The combination of him and Calcaterra next season could be similar to the production that Goedert gives, plus they would save money and get younger.

The Dolphins get a win-now tight end that makes them a step closer to being contenders. They also have Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who they signed in free agency, who is projected to be the third wide receiver on the depth chart. Washington is going to get limited snaps in Miami and would be in a better situation for himself in Philadelphia.

The Dolphins may be on the tight end hunt pretty soon, and no one better to get than the starting tight end on the Super Bowl Champions. That winning attitude with Goedert's skillset would be a perfect fit in Miami, and they should look to him immediately if they trade Jonu Smith.
