New Chargers OC Reveals Plan For Offensive Attack, Despite Potential Limitations
USA TODAY Sports

The Los Angeles Chargers brought in new offensive coordinator Greg Roman to work under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Roman has crafted numerous offenses throughout his years in the NFL, typically focusing on running the football.

Los Angeles struggled to run the ball in 2023, but with Harbaugh in the mix now, most knew that would change. He has always valued a strong running game that sets up the passing attack.

Roman spoke about the plan to run the ball more next season, saying that it keeps defenses on their toes throughout a game.

"I think in this league, you can really, really help dictate the defenses if you have a strong running attack," Roman said. "If you really talk to most defensive coordinators in this league and got 'em off to the side when they're playing a really good running team, they're sweating a little bit. They're sleeping a little less that week."

The Bolts aren't sure who will be in the backfield at the start of the season, with a few key players currently entering free agency. But there has been speculation about the team bringing back Austin Ekeler or going out to land a splashy free agent.

Either way, the Bolts know that running the ball will be key. Even though quarterback Justin Herbert doesn't run the ball often, Roman isn't too concerned.

"We'll give it to anybody that can gain yards," Roman said. "And then will Justin run the ball? ... It'll probably be more as a scrambler. Will we have some of that other stuff in our back pocket? Remains to be seen."

The Chargers offense will look a little different next season, and for good reason. With this new coaching staff leading the charge, the Bolts may finally look like the team that many have been hoping for.
