New England Patriots Could Pursue Intriguing Trade With Colts
Jenna Watson/IndyStar / USA TODAY NETWORK

In the wake of Ja’Whaun Bentley’s season-ending injury, the New England Patriots find themselves in desperate need of a linebacker to fill the gap.

ESPN’s Dan Graziano has floated an intriguing potential trade target: Indianapolis Colts linebacker E.J. Speed.

The 29-year-old Speed is coming off a breakout 2023 season in which he posted career-best numbers, tallying 102 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four pass breakups, and three forced fumbles. His athleticism and playmaking ability would provide an immediate boost to a Patriots defense that prides itself on versatility and toughness.

But the question remains: Is Speed the right fit for New England, and would it make sense to pursue a trade?

The Patriots are renowned for making shrewd personnel moves, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Speed’s combination of size, speed, and athleticism aligns perfectly with the Patriots’ defensive scheme.

His ability to play both inside and outside linebacker, combined with his experience as a core special teamer, would give New England much-needed flexibility.

With Bentley out for the season, Jerod Mayo’s linebacker corps has a significant void to fill. Bentley was a central figure in the middle of the defense, a reliable tackler with strong leadership skills.

While Bentley’s presence will be hard to replace, Speed has shown flashes of brilliance that suggest he could be up to the task.

The concern, however, lies in the fact that Speed is a free agent after this season. Acquiring him without a plan to extend his contract would be a risky move for the Patriots, particularly if their playoff hopes diminish as the season progresses.

New England would need to commit to a long-term investment in Speed if they hope to truly benefit from his talents.

The Colts are currently in a rebuilding phase, with an eye toward the future under new quarterback Anthony Richardson. If they fall out of playoff contention, the Colts could be motivated to offload Speed, especially since he is due for free agency in 2025.

In return, the Patriots could offer a mid-round draft pick—consistent with the value of acquiring a starting-caliber linebacker with a limited contract.

For New England, this trade would hinge on their confidence in being able to sign Speed to a multi-year extension. Otherwise, giving up valuable draft capital for what could amount to a half-season rental wouldn’t align with the franchise’s long-term strategy.

E.J. Speed presents an exciting opportunity for the Patriots, especially in the wake of Bentley’s injury. If New England is serious about maintaining a competitive defense and pushing for the playoffs, Speed’s dynamic skill set would help fill a critical need in their front seven.

However, the financial aspect of extending him post-trade is something the Patriots must consider carefully. Should they be able to strike a deal that works for both sides, Speed could become a pivotal figure in the Patriots’ defense for years to come.
