New Orleans Saints ‘getting close’ to figuring out future of star running back

The fate of New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara is likely soon to be unveiled by the team as head coach Kellen Moore shared the team is “getting close” on a final decision according to ESPN.

Kamara, 30, is entering the final year of his contract where he is due $11.5 million. However, the decision making process was ignited by the front office after is signed free agent running back Travie Etienne to a four-year deal with an average of $11.8 million.

As it currently sits, the Saints are due to pay roughly $23.3 million to the backfield pair this upcoming season.

Kamara has played all nine years of his career with the Saints where he has been named to five Pro Bowls during that span. For what it’s worth, general manager Mickey Loomis is still working alongside Moore to see if there is a role in the offense for Kamara.

“We’re just trying to see how he’s going to fit in our roster, and obviously there’s a resource management element to it, and we’ll get to that over the next week or two,” Loomis said.

The Saints are in the midst of a major rebuild after finishing last season 6-11, missing the postseason for a fifth straight season.
