Patrick Mahomes’ season came to a sudden halt after a serious knee injury suffered in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers. New details now show the injury may be more complex than first believed. Mahomes tore both his left ACL and LCL, which can make recovery harder. He underwent surgery on Monday in Dallas after seeking a second opinion.

The Kansas City Chiefs confirmed Mahomes had successful surgery with Dr. Dan Cooper. The team said rehab will begin right away, but no return date was shared.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported the added LCL tear does not guarantee a longer rehab. Still, it adds another layer to the process and raises questions about timing.

"Patrick Mahomes also tore his LCL, along with his ACL, sources say. While that can complicate recovery, it doesn’t necessary extend his rehab longer than 9 months or so." Rapoport reported on X.

Mahomes was hurt late in Kansas City’s 16-13 loss to Los Angeles and needed help leaving the field. He finished the game with 189 passing yards, one interception, and one rushing touchdown. The injury ended the Chiefs’ playoff hopes and marked the first time Mahomes’ season ended before January.

Gardner Minshew is set to start for the rest of the 2025-26 season. He will take over beginning with Sunday’s road game against the Titans. Kansas City will now use the final weeks to assess its roster and plan for next year.

Mahomes still posted solid numbers despite a difficult season. He threw for 3,587 yards with 22 touchdowns and ranked near the top in QBR. His leadership remained clear even as the offense struggled for balance.

The Chiefs are 6-8 and third in the AFC West. Defensive play has kept them competitive, but close losses have defined their year so far.

Now, for Mahomes’ fans, his recovery will take time, and he could possibly return for the 2026 season.
