The Dallas Cowboys improved to 7-8-1 after defeating the Washington Commanders 30-23 on Christmas Day. Just five days later, the team waived cornerback Trevon Diggs, who would be claimed by the Green Bay Packers.
In his final game for the Cowboys, he recorded just one tackle and no other statistics. However, the former Alabama cornerback was responsible for a costly penalty.
With 6:14 left in the second quarter, Diggs was flagged for a horse collar tackle of Commanders running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt.
Instead of facing third-and-10, Washington netted 15 yards and an automatic first down. The Commanders finished the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 21-10.
Not only did Diggs aid the Commanders in a touchdown drive, but it also meant he could receive an additional punishment. The NFL's rulebook states that players can be fined $17,389 for a horse collar tackle and $23,186 for a second offense in the same season.
If he did receive a fine, it wouldn't be the first of his career. Since joining the NFL in 2020, Diggs has been fined four times, totalling $46,613. The most recent came for a tripping violation against the New York Jets in Week 5.
The Week 17 gameday accountability report was announced on Saturday. Fortunately for Diggs, he was not one of the names to appear on the report. The NFL handed out a total of 25 fines, which is two fewer than in Week 16.
Up next for the cornerback is his debut with Green Bay. The 9-6-1 Packers face the 8-8 Minnesota Vikings with the NFC's No. 7 seed already locked up.
