NFL Announces Punishment for Eagles CB Cooper DeJean

Cooper DeJean became a star during his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles, helping them win Super Bowl LIX. The Eagles got off to a solid start to the 2025 NFL season as their Super Bowl defense begins, taking down Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys 24-20.

With 5:55 left in the first quarter of Eagles-Cowboys, Philadelphia kicked off after tying the game at 7-7. Dallas wideout Kavontae Turpin returned the ball to the 24-yard line, where a minor scrum broke out.

During the exchange, DeJean and Cowboys LB Marist Liufau had some words before the former Iowa Hawkeyes cornerback ripped Liufau's helmet off. In retaliation, Liufau grabbed ahold of DeJean's facemask, proceeding to rip it off himself.

Liufau, not DeJean, was called for an unnecessary roughness penalty.

For his actions against Liufau, the NFL revealed that DeJean has been fined $11,593 for "unnecessary roughness/facemask."

Along with DeJean, Eagles cornerback Jakorian Bennett has been fined $23,186 for a "hip-drop tackle" late in the second quarter. Linebacker Nolan Smith was charged $11,593 for "taunting" in the second quarter as well. And DT Jalen Carter was hit with a $57,222 fine after spitting on Prescott before the first snap, causing an ejection.

For Dallas, Liufau was fined $7,186 for his "facemask," while tackle Tyler Guyton was hit with a $12,172 fine for "striking/kicking/kneeing" in the first quarter.

DeJean and the Eagles will be back in action on "Sunday Night Football", facing Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of last season's Super Bowl.
