The Philadelphia Eagles are widely recognized as having the best front office in the NFL. Howie Roseman and Jeffrey Lurie are locked in step, and fans around the league struggle to understand how the franchise keeps getting away with all of their great additions.
Not only has the team drafted incredibly well over the years, but players like Saquon Barkley, Zack Baun, and Mekhi Becton are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of finding great players on the open market. Even Roseman and Co. make the occasional mistake, however.
Before the 2024 NFL season, the Eagles signed former All-Pro linebacker Devin White from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They gave him just a one-year deal worth $4 million, but $3.5 million of it was guaranteed, and he never played a down in Philadelphia.
White was drafted in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he was an integral part of their Super Bowl victory in 2020. However, Bucs general manager Jason Licht recently spoke to The Athletic's Dan Pompei, and he painted an image of major regret about White.
“Knowing what I know now, he would have been off my board. It was too much about him.”Jason Licht, Buccaneers GM
This sentiment is certainly understood by Eagles fans, who were once excited about the addition of White but struggled to understand him not being on the field. While this does not make fans feel better about the signing itself, they know at least that they are not alone in how they feel about him.
In early October, the team finally parted ways with White, and he ended up with the Houston Texans. There, he played seven games and recorded 19 tackles, as well as the worst pass-rush and tackling grades of his career, according to Pro Football Focus.
Philadelphia clearly dodged a bullet by not putting White on the field, and now he is already missing tackles with the Las Vegas Raiders during the preseason. His fall from grace is difficult to grasp, but Licht's comments echo exactly how Eagles fans felt about the situation last season.
White may still have some gas left in the tank, as he is still just 27 years old. However, Eagles fans should be glad that they are not the ones who have to find out whether he does or not, and they won't be footing the bill for it either way.
