Not many former NFL players have done as much with their post-playing careers as Hall of Fame pass rusher Michael Strahan has. He's been a daily presence on television for the better part of 20 years, becoming one of America's most popular media figures in the process.
But Strahan has greater ambitions than television. He has a big goal for his career involving a return to the NFL in a brand new way.
In an interview with Rich Kleiman for Boardroom, Strahan revealed that he would love to be an NFL owner someday.
"I'd love to own," Strahan said. "I love being the ownership side."
As for how he'd run a team if he were in charge, Strahan said he's less interested in being a person with absolute control and someone who simply advises what a team needs and provides leadership.
"I'm not there to say, ‘Well, you should draft that guy and you should do this.’ I want to be in an ownership position where I just advise (on) what you need. And I think one of the things that I felt good at with the (New York) Giants, which was like leadership, understanding guys, understanding motivation, understanding what pushes yourself to be great, the mentality that it takes," he added.
Strahan would hardly be the first or the most famous ex-NFL player to get a piece of an NFL team if he ever achieved the goal. The NFL's all-time leading passer Tom Brady is one of a handful of former players who have gone from playing to owning.
But Strahan's biggest obstacle towards achieving his dream will most likely be money. Yahoo reported earlier this year that Strahan's net worth is around $65 million. If he emptied his bank account it still might not be enough money to buy his way into a team unless someone gave him an insane bargain.
For context, Brady paid a whopping $220 million for a mere 10-percent of the Raiders several years ago. As far as managing control of a team goes, the current going rate is in the billions.
Strahan may be more qualified than some actual owners to run an NFL team, but the only qualification that teams seem to care about these days is having enough money.
