NFL Legend Tom Brady Has Strong Words For Patrick Mahomes Before Season

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has become widely considered the best player in the NFL heading into the 2025 season. The former Texas Tech quarterback has three Super Bowl wins in five appearances, along with two NFL MVP awards.

Yet, while Mahomes has accomplished so much in his eight seasons, he still has a long way to go to catch Tom Brady, who won seven Super Bowls and three MVPs with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Still, Brady remains impressed with what he has seen from Mahomes.

On Sunday, Brady joined PFF’s Chris Collinsworth from the Bahamas as a guest speaker. When asked what sets Patrick Mahomes apart from quarterbacks like Joe Burrow, Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen in big games, Brady shared his thoughts.

“I think his performance and poise under pressure is tremendous," Brady said of Mahomes. "He's had two really tough Super Bowls. One was against us at the Bucs, and obviously, one was against the Eagles, who had a tremendous defense and doing that game last year, they really suffocated Patrick. In all the games that I've watched him play, he's just a tremendous field general...

"When the teammates get in the huddle with him, they have a belief in him that I think is greater than the belief that the other players have in their quarterbacks. And not to say that they don't, I mean, Josh Allen, his teammates believe in him exponentially. Lamar the same way, Joe Burrow the same way.

"It's just Patrick has proven it now longer than those guys have that he performs his best in the biggest moments with the most on the line. A lot of it you can see it in their eyes. Who wants to be in those moments and Patrick wants to be in those moments. Yeah, those Super Bowl losses are very discouraging and they're tough, but again Patrick needs to use that to his advantage going forward.”

Mahomes has made seven AFC Championship Games and five Super Bowls throughout his career. Allen, Jackson and Burrow have combined for just five AFC championship appearances and one Super Bowl during their NFL tenures.

Mahomes and the Chiefs will kick off the 2025 NFL season on Friday, facing the Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
