Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are set close out their season on Sunday with a road game against the New York Giants. It will technically be a non-bearing game for the 7-8-1 Cowboys after they had already been eliminated from playoff contention, but Dallas will want to end its season on a high note.
The Cowboys will be looking to make it back-to-back wins after their 30-23 victory against the Washington Commanders in Week 17, which was Dallas’ first win in their last four games.
Prescott was involved in a contentious incident during the Commanders game after the five-time Pro Bowl quarterback took a hard hit from Washington linebacker Frankie Luvu. The NFL has reviewed the incident in question and has made its decision on any potential punishment.
At the 5:58 mark of the third quarter, Prescott was sacked by Commanders linebacker Von Miller. A couple of Washington players then came in to tackle Prescott after he had already been sacked. Luvu delivered a late hit on the Cowboys QB right as Prescott was spiking the ball in frustration.
Based on the replays, it did not seem like Luvu had realized that Prescott had already been sacked. His tackle was deemed excessive, resulting in an unnecessary roughness penalty against the Commanders LB. The penalty negated Miller’s sack as Washington was hit with a 15-yard penalty on the play.

The NFL Officiating Department reviews all unnecessary roughness penalties for potential punishment. In fact, in Week 17 alone, 21 incidents of unnecessary roughness were fined. The most substantial ones were against Azeez Al-Shaair of the Houston Texans and Alontae Taylor of the New Orleans Saints, who were both fined $23,186 for use of the helmet.
The good news for Luvu is that he was not included in the NFL's list of fines from Week 17, which was announced on Saturday via the gameday accountability report. The Commanders LB has been spared of another hefty fine.
For context, Luvu has already been fined eight times in his career, amounting to $245,242. This season alone, he's been punished for three instances of a hip-drop tackle. His third violation resulted in a $100,000 fine.
As Prescott and the Cowboys travel to East Rutherford for their season finale against the Giants, the Commanders will also be on the road for Week 18. Washington will end its campaign with a matchup against the defending champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, at Lincoln Financial Field.
