If you watched the national media's coverage of Pittsburgh Steelers OTAs last week, you would have thought that Aaron Rodgers was on the team, and it was a crime against a humanity that he wasn't in Pittsburgh.
Far-fetched to say the least, the noise is there nonetheless.
And it appears, that noise is starting to become too loud for certain players who wear Black and Gold...
“I have been told that he has not affirmatively told the Steelers that he’s coming,” NFL Media insider Tom Pelissero said on the Rich Eisen Show last week. "There’s all these signs that he’s coming but he has not affirmatively said ‘Hey, June 9 book me the ticket. I’m coming in and I’m going to join this team.’ That has not happened as of this point...
"...There are people in that locker room who I believe would tell you they’re already over this thing. They just wanna know what’s going on. And they’re sick of hearing about it, and they’re sick of being asked about it. They don’t want to discuss it anymore.”
I mean, can you blame them? I would imagine that as bad as some of the players want Rodgers to be there, the constant questions of "Do you know when he's coming? What have you heard? Are you sure he won't retire?" are starting to get old for the veterans like Cam Heyward, and Minkah Fitzpatrick.
Cam Heyward made headlines months ago when he seemed like he was over the whole thing by sending a message to Rodgers that the recruiting pitch was that he could be a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Will players being exhausted by the situation change the timeline? Doubtful. If anything, Rodgers would do the opposite, digging his heels in and waiting until training camp or even longer to join the team.
In fairness to him, he has noted some serious personal reasons for his delay, and if he had signed and then just missed OTAs and minicamp while being on the roster, that would have been an even bigger story,
So, as Steelers president and owner Art Rooney has said, "we'll keep waiting."
