NFL owners make major decision about Roger Goodell

NFL owners have removed all doubt about Roger Goodell’s future as the league’s commissioner.

Goodell has agreed to a new four-year contract extension that runs through the 2030 season. The league’s Compensation Committee, chaired by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, confirmed the decision in a memo to his fellow owners.

“We believe we are very fortunate to have Roger at the helm for the next four years,” Kraft’s announcement read.

Goodell’s previous contract was set to expire in March 2027, but there had been little doubt that the owners were going to give him a new deal.

While Goodell may be a controversial figure among fans, his tenure has been an enormous success for the league’s owners, whom he ultimately represents. League revenues are higher than ever, and the NFL is unquestionably the most prominent sports league in North America. It is safe to assume that his new four-year agreement will see him try to implement a major scheduling change that owners have long sought.

Goodell’s new contract runs through the end of the 2030 season. Assuming he fulfills the entire length of it, he will have been commissioner for 24 years by the time it expires.
