New York Giants star running back Cam Skattebo was penalized for a violent run he made with his helmet during last weekend’s game against the Houston Texans.
Skattebo was hit with an “unnecessary roughness” penalty for a run he made early in the first quarter.
The second-year Giants running back isn’t planning on changing how he plays.
“I’ll keep that conversation between us, but I will say, the NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that but then also wants to take stuff from me,” Skattebo said while speaking to reporters. “I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball. And if I’m going to continue to get flags for it or fined for it, guess I’m going to play for free. I’m going to do everything I can to be on this team, to give everything I’ve got, and if they’re going to punish me for that I’m just going to keep doing it, keep playing hard.”
As it turns out, there were eight helmet infractions during Week 7. However, Skattebo was the only player penalized.
“The league fined Skattebo $7,073. The seven players fined but not flagged were: Bears cornerback Clark Phillips ($11,550); Broncos safety Brandon Jones ($23,882); Broncos Alex Singleton ($47,662); Lions safety Brian Branch ($23,882); Colts cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt ($7,791); Steelers receiver Brandon Smith ($4,916); and 49ers running back Jordan James ($6,194),” Mike Florio shared.
“The fines increase as the violations repeat. For Singleton, who was fined $23,882 for illegal use of the helmet, it was the second straight week he was fined.”
NFL fans aren’t too happy.
“The league is biased against him!” one shared.
NFL officiating crews know how violent of a runner Skattebo is and they are obviously on alert for hits he makes.
It doesn’t necessarily make them biased against him, but it does put Skattebo in a tough situation.
The former Arizona State star isn’t going to change how he plays. However, he’s not going to stop being penalized, either.
