Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett has struggled over his first couple of seasons, and now, he is sidelined after undergoing surgery to repair a high-ankle sprain.
The fact that Pickett may be done for the remainder of the year (or at least three to four weeks) has some wondering if the Steelers will ultimately choose to move on from the youngster this offseason, but apparently, that will not be the case.
According to Brooke Pryor of ESPN, Pittsburgh has not given any indication that it plans to move on from Pickett at the moment.
Of course, that does not necessarily mean that the Steelers won’t explore other options this spring.
Pittsburgh selected Pickett with the 20th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft, and the early returns on the University of Pittsburgh product have not been great.
He played in 13 games and made 12 starts during his rookie campaign, throwing for 2,404 yards, seven touchdowns and nine interceptions while completing 63 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 76.7.
Through 12 outings this year, Pickett has not been much better, totaling 2,070 yards, six touchdowns and four picks while completing 62 percent of his throws and registering a passer rating of 81.4.
While Pickett has done a better job of limiting his turnovers, he has essentially stagnated in every other area of his game.
As a result, the Steelers’ offense has suffered this season, ranking just 26th in the NFL in yardage and 28th in scoring. Pittsburgh’s offensive issues are certainly not all Pickett’s fault, but there is also no question that his shoddy play under center has made things a heck of a lot more difficult for the club.
Kenny Pickett still has another two years remaining on his rookie deal, so the Steelers may want to ride it out with the 25-year-old for at least one more season before they make any drastic decisions.
Pittsburgh is 7-6 and will battle the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, Dec. 18.
