NFL writer's definitive statement on Eagles' ceiling and floor in 2025

With all the preseason watchlists, rankings, and speculation almost coming to a close, CBS Sports provided a final prediction for the success of all 32 NFL teams, along with a worst-case scenario for each franchise.

Jeff Kerr has set the "high" or ceiling for the Eagles as repeating as Super Bowl champions with a 14-3 regular season record, with a "floor" of the team going 12-5, losing in the divisional round.

"On paper, this doesn't sound like a very bold prediction, but any time you pick a team to repeat as champion in the NFC East, it counts as bold. The division has somehow gone 21 YEARS without a repeat champion. The last team to pull off the feat was the Eagles when they won four division titles in a row from 2001-04. The Eagles (-140) are actually the favorites to win the NFC East this year, so in that sense, this isn't bold, but I'm picking against TWO DECADES OF HISTORY, so we're counting it as bold.

If everyone stays healthy, I feel like the Eagles can coast to the division title and that's mainly because the other three teams in the division all have at least one glaring weakness."

Do Kerr's ceiling and floor match what the Eagles will actually do in 2025?

Predicting the Eagles to repeat as Super Bowl champions may be a bit lazy by Kerr, as currently, Philadelphia reigns supreme before teams kick off on Thursday. With the team being the most recent owners of the Lombardi Trophy, the Eagles are obviously contenders for a consecutive championship in 2025.

The Eagles' offense is one of the most dominating units in football, with their offensive line considered the best in the league. Between the Eagles' rushing attack and a stout front-seven on the defensive side of the ball, Philadelphia is primed to return to the pinnacle of the National Football League.

While there is plenty to love about the Eagles' odds to repeat, there is one glaring hole on the defensive side of the ball. Whomever lines up across from Quinyon Mitchell will have their hands full come Week 1.

The Eagles lost five starters/key contributors from Fangio's defensive unit this offseason, leading to plenty of questions. Coupled with the departures of key players, the Eagles have begun their youth movement on defense. The unit is the youngest in the NFL, and while Howie Roseman did a great job adding to the foundation, the team may need its young players to mature a bit quicker than expected.

While no one doubts the Eagles ability to compete in 2025, they will have a crowded conference to battle through. With the 49ers, Rams, and Lions healthy along with the improved rosters of Commanders, Packers, and Vikings the Eagles have plenty of competition if they want to repeat this season.
