Nick Wright's Ridiculous J.J. McCarthy Trade Idea Has Resurfaced

FS1's Nick Wright is known to occasionally drum up some interesting trade scenarios. But one involving J.J. McCarthy from earlier this offseason has begun to resurface for all of the wrong reasons.

Amid McCarthy's struggles as Minnesota's full-time starter, a March take by the "First Things First" host proposing that the Vikings should shop the former Michigan star to Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers in exchange for Justin Herbert has begun to go viral again.

McCarthy is coming off a game against the Packers that saw him throw for just 87 yards with a pair of interceptions in a 23-6 loss. Meanwhile, Herbert has continued to show traits that place him amongst the league's best.

That led to a pretty public call out from one of Wright's contemporaries who covers the Bolts on X.

Wright: 'Call the Chargers and see [if you could get] Justin Herbert'

“If the Vikings are this squeamish about J.J. McCarthy … then they should quietly call the Chargers, be like 'Hey, Jim Harbaugh, this guy who you said was the best quarterback you ever coached, the best quarterback in your draft, we’ll give you him and our first-round pick and we’ll take Justin Herbert,'” Wright said a handful of months ago.

"The contract is tradable. Kevin O'Connell clearly thinks [Sam] Darnold's not good enough—which I agree with him," the "FTF" personality continued. "Jim Harbaugh could really do the whole Michigan thing with a cheap quarterback, not have the obligation to pass the ball a ton cause your quarterback's cheap already ... call the Chargers and see if J.J. plus a first-round pick could get you Justin Herbert."

While Wright admitted that the likelihood of that happening would be pretty unrealistic, it didn't stop the FOX Sports host from getting called out on social media.

Nick Wright slammed over 'impossible' trade

"The idea that J.J. McCarthy and a 1st could land you Justin Herbert isn’t just unrealistic — it’s fairy-tale delusion. The Chargers aren’t trading a Ferrari for a plastic tricycle," Ryan DePaul said.

"There is zero chance — not 'low chance' or even 'unlikely,' but literally zero — that the Chargers pick up the phone for that," DePaul added.

"This is one of those takes where you don’t even know where to start correcting it because the foundation is made of wet cardboard and wishful thinking. At this point, Nick’s trade ideas are impossible to take seriously."

Clearly, it's not something that LA would be remotely open to entertaining at this point in time — especially with Harbaugh's feelings on Justin Herbert and the production he's been able to put up since the coach took over.

But if McCarthy continues to play like this, it may not be long before he finds himself involved in a much different trade out of the Twin Cities for far less of a return.
