No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence officially named Jaguars starting quarterback

Trevor Lawrence has officially been named the Jacksonville Jaguars starting quarterback, the team announced Wednesday. He will start Week 1 against the Houston Texans on Sept. 12.

There was never really any doubt that Lawrence would be the Jags' starter after Jacksonville selected him first overall in this year's draft. However, head coach Urban Meyer insisted throughout the summer that Lawrence would have to compete for the job against Gardner Minshew.

Lawrence hasn't been very impressive during the preseason, but neither has Jacksonville's starting offense, which has scored just three points in the first halves of two preseason games.

Lawrence completed 6-of-9 passes for 71 yards in Jacksonville's preseason opener against the Cleveland Browns and 14-of-23 passes for 113 yards against the New Orleans Saints.

While Lawrence is set to start Week 1, though, fellow first-round pick Travis Etienne, who was supposed to be a significant factor in Jacksonville's offense, suffered a Lisfranc injury and will miss the entire season.

Should Lawrence struggle, it might not only be his fault. The Jaguars still need to upgrade in several areas, but adding the Clemson standout and Etienne certainly is a start.

Still, if Lawrence struggles during the 2021 season, Jacksonville could be back to the drawing board. Week 1 will bee a significant milestone for the 21-year-old.
