Now Is The Time to Cut Bait with Tua
Entering 2025, it seemed like Tua Tagovailoa had found his place in the NFL.
He was not going to be in the upper elite echelon of starting quarterbacks in the league, but at his peak, he could be just below that, and at worst, he would be an above-average player.
And, at his absolute best, like he was in 2023, he could morph into an MVP-caliber player.
Well, through three games into this season, it seemed like Tagovailoa is no longer capable of reaching that goal.
Even worse, it seems like he has massively regressed and is actively costing the team wins.
That makes it the time for the team to cut its losses and start over at the quarterback position.
I will be honest.
I have been a Tua defender for the majority of his time with the organization.
Even when he has had his down moments, I chose to look at the potential he has shown, whether it was the six-touchdown passing performance against in a crazy comeback win over Baltimore or when he led the entire league in passing in 2023.
That’s what makes this downturn in 2025 even worse.
We have all seen him at his absolute best, and even at his best, it is still not good enough to get this franchise to where it ultimately wants to go.
That is a clear signal that it is best for both parties to move on.
I compare this to the Ryan Tannehill era.
While Tannehill did not show the same exact potential as Tagovailoa, he did have a very strong 2016 season, where it seemed like he turned a corner to become a face of the franchise.
But, after a knee injury that year and in 2017, it was clear that he was not the same player.
And then in 2018, he struggled to get back into form and actually regressed.
Miami finally made the right call to eat some of his salary and send him to Tennessee for draft capital.
It actually turned out the best for both parties as Tannehill resurrected his career with the Titans.
That might turn out to be the best formula for the Tagovailoa conundrum.
Miami should be willing to eat some of his salary and trade him somewhere where he will get to start over.
Tannehill did it after seven years in Miami.
Tagovailoa would do it after six years with the Dolphins.
Starting over at the position and cutting bait with Tagovailoa would be the best for everyone involved.
