One storyline that has been at the center of attention at Philadephia Eagles training camp is what's going on with the CB2 position battle going on between Adoree' Jackson and Kelee Ringo.
Jackson and Ringo struggled in the Week 1 preseason matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Ringo allowed a 36-yard touchdown from Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, and while Jackson looked good in open field tackles, he didn't add much to the coverage.
Even with Jakorian Bennett joining the picture for the CB2 job, he hasn't exactly impressed as well. To be fair to Bennett, he's only been with the team for over a week, but patience might be running out for the Eagles at the position.
This might lead to others getting involved in the race to be the starter alongside Quinyon Mitchell on the outside. Would Eli Ricks make sense? Is there someone else who should be in the conversation?
Bleeding Green Nation's Brandon Lee Gowton wrote in his training camp observations article on Thursday that someone else should be in the picture: rookie fifth-round pick Mac McWilliams.
"Mac McWilliams continues to take second-team cornerback reps on the outside as opposed to working in the slot where he did earlier this offseason. McWilliams might be a contender to start on the outside. If not by Week 1, perhaps at some point this year."
McWilliams had a solid college career at UAB, but never made any all-conference teams. He was just a steady, consistent starter at cornerback.
So far in training camp, it has been good reviews for McWilliams to be Cooper DeJean's backup in the slot. With DeJean potentially playing safety and outside corner in specific packages, it might open the door for McWilliams to get some playing time on the field.
It might be a risk to start a rookie on the outside who hasn't had enough time in Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's scheme. Fangio has tended to go with the more veteran guys with experience in the system over a rookie, but starting Mitchell and DeJean as rookies last year paid off for Philly so McWilliams could work.
The chances of McWilliams starting on the outside seem low. Eagles fans can still expect Jackson or Ringo to be one of the guys, by McWilliams has a chance to develop into a potential starter down the line.
