Packers Land Speedy SEC WR Amid Injury Concerns

The Green Bay Packers continue to reshape the lower end of their wide receiver group as training camp progresses and the preseason draws closer.

On Sunday, the team was awarded wide receiver Chris Hilton Jr. off waivers from the Washington Commanders, adding a player known for his straight-line speed and college background at LSU.

Hilton signed with Washington as an undrafted free agent in May following five seasons with the Tigers. His college production remained modest overall, totaling 41 receptions for 780 yards and six touchdowns, yet he consistently showed the ability to stretch the field.

Across his LSU career, he averaged 19 yards per catch, a mark that underscored his explosiveness even when the raw numbers stayed limited. That same trait stood out at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he posted an official 4.41-second 40-yard dash.

The Commanders released him Saturday while clearing roster space for offensive linemen. Green Bay claimed him the next day, according to the league’s transaction wire and reports from NFL reporter Aaron Wilson.

For the Packers, the move brings a developmental deep threat into a receiver room already featuring speed at the top of the depth chart. Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, and Matthew Golden entered camp as the primary trio, with 2025 third-round selection Savion Williams also competing for a larger role.

Hilton now joins that mix as another option who can force defensive backs to respect the vertical game.

Timing appears favorable for the new arrival. Reed sat out Sunday’s practice with an ankle issue and Golden was held out with a toe injury, creating extra snaps further down the depth chart.

Williams took advantage of the openings, hauling in five passes during 11-on-11 work that included a 60-yard touchdown after a coverage breakdown. Hilton will face a similar short-term opportunity to earn practice reps and special teams consideration as the coaching staff evaluates its final roster decisions.

The claim of Hilton formed part of a busy day for Green Bay’s receiver evaluation. The team also signed Kisean Johnson earlier Sunday and worked out Devin Voisin, an undrafted prospect out of South Alabama.

Those additional moves signal that the Packers remain open to adjusting the bottom of the group while injuries create temporary openings.

Hilton, with his LSU pedigree and documented speed, now has the chance to prove he belongs in the mix as the preseason approaches.
