Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and Jordan Love have equal ownership in Green Bay’s Sunday loss to the Cleveland Browns.
Afterwards, and after Grant Delpit pulled down a Love interception that ralled the Browns from 10-3 down to win the game, LaFleur stepped up and took responsibility for the play.
“Bad playcall,” LaFleur told reporters in Cleveland.
The situation likely called for a running play, given that the Packers were on their own 18-yard line but facing a 3rd and 3, with Josh Jacobs on the roster and the potential to keep the clock moving before either moving the chains or punting the ball away.
Instead, Love made a terrible throw that Delpit made him pay for and sparked Cleveland’s furious comeback that was capped by a last-second field goal to win the game.
“We shouldn’t have called that play,” LaFleur said. “That’s on me…it’s just a bad playcall. What’s unfortunate was our defense was playing so well, and we knew we couldn’t make a deadly mistake like that to give them a short field, and that’s exactly what happened.”
The Packers will look to bounce back Sunday night, in Dallas, against the Cowboys in a game that carries significant postseason implications later on down the line than Sunday did against the Browns.
