Packers' Matt LaFleur Sets Zach Tom’s Path For 2025 Season

Zach Tom has quickly become one of the cornerstones of Green Bay’s offense. Last season, he finished just behind Lane Johnson and Penei Sewell in All-Pro voting for right tackles. He has played all five positions on the offensive line and is arguably Green Bay’s most important player on offense.

Since 2006, only two Packers offensive tackles have recorded both an 80.0+ pass-blocking and run-blocking grade in a single season: David Bakhtiari in 2020—when he earned First-Team All-Pro honors—and Zach Tom in 2024. Tom has played all five positions within the offensive line and done a commendable job every time. He will enter the final year of his rookie deal in 2025, and he should soon reset the market for right tackles.

On Monday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur spent some time with the media discussing Tom. He outlined the plan he and the coaching staff have for the All-Pro caliber right tackle going into 2025.

“I think that’s the plan, absolutely,” LaFleur said about Tom staying at right tackle.

"That's where he's found his home, LaFleur added. "But what's great about him is if you do have something that happens, he gives you flexibility up front."

It makes sense for both Zach Tom and the Packers to keep him on the outside. He has been one of the league’s top tackles, so there is no reason to alter what is already working. Moving him inside is not necessary when he is excelling in his current role.

As for Tom, he is already eligible for an early contract extension. From a business standpoint, he is far more likely to secure a lucrative deal as a tackle than at any interior position. Tom and his camp will want to maximize his value by getting paid as one of the league’s top offensive tackles.

Zach Tom has given up just seven sacks in 1,599 career pass-blocking snaps. Last year, he put up a career-high, elite 87.8 run-blocking grade. He is on track to become the highest-paid right tackle in the NFL. It is hard to imagine Green Bay allowing him to enter free agency, so it is likely both sides will reach a contract agreement well before the start of the 2026 league year.
