As the NFL trade deadline rapidly approaches, there is a strong belief among those inside the league that the players most likely to be traded are players on expiring contracts.
For the Packers, and general manager Brian Gutekunst, that means there may only be two viable trade targets at cornerback, a premium position that also happens to be one of the few glaring weaknesses across Green Bay’s roster.
But, after the Eagles acquired Michael Carter from the New York Jets, and the fading Tennessee Titans shipped Roger McCreary to the Los Angeles Rams, it pickings could be getting slim for Gutekunst if the Packers are looking to keep pace in the NFC’s arms race at the position.
Over at SBNation, Justis Mosqueda points out what could make Taylor-Britt both an option and a trade deadline liability for the Packers.
“Taylor-Britt was benched mid-season this year,” Mosqueda points out. “Only earning two starts for the Bengals. He’s another 2022 draft pick, going 60th overall via Nebraska. Like Woolen, he’s mostly played as an outside cornerback.
“Basically, the cornerback market is players who won’t be extended and are under contract for just the next half-season. Why? Because these teams don’t seem to be interested in re-signing these players after their rookie deals, but the teams will also only receive draft pick compensation for these players if they leave in free agency AND their teams spend less for incoming free agents than their outgoing free agents receive. That’s how the NFL’s compensatory draft pick formula works.”
Given that the Packers could be primed to see some marquee free agents walk out the door next March, the question for Gutekunst becomes whether it is worth potentially losing out on compensatory draft picks in favor of a half-season rental to perhaps put Green Bay over the top this season as well as using the final stretch of the year as an audition to sign the player to a long-term contract.
Since coordinator Jeff Hafley’s system puts so much pressure on cornerback play, it might just be worth the gamble to go all-in at the position to maximize the Packers’ 2025 window.
