Injuries have wreaked havoc with the Packers’ offensive line through the season’s first five games, but that isn’t the only issue that’s plaguing Luke Butkus’ unit.
While the Packers could be getting Aaron Banks back, and Zach Tom’s absence has been a major contributing factor to inconsistencies up front, this is a group that has seen a rotating cast of characters so far this season.
According to veteran NFL reporter Mike Tanier, the Packers’ inability to establish any continuity has resulted in the group being among the lowest-graded lines in the league.
“There was no new early-week injury news on rookie tackle Anthony Belton,” Tanier writes, for Too Deep Zone. “Who has also dealt with an ankle injury all year. But Tom’s return will send Belton back to the bench.
“Tuesday’s health updates were especially wonderful news for me, because I was dreading the task of fine-tooth-combing Packers injuries reports to determine who was available when and why. It doesn’t matter now! I got this done in 120 words and 15 minutes of research and writing! Continuity Grade: C-“
Tanier lists the Packers, currently as the No. 27-ranked line, in terms of continuity.
So far this season, quarterback Jordan Love has been sacked eight times, and the ground game has been wildly inconsistent, resulting from the offensive line struggling to find its footing.
As Tanier points out, Tom returning could be a significant shot in the arm for the Packers’ offensive line, when it needs it most, ahead of a matchup against All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson and a disruptive Bengals front-seven.
