Packers Receive Bad Jordan Love News on Tuesday

For the second time in as many seasons, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love could be limited early in the campaign. He suffered a leg injury in the season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, and now, he's dealing with a ligament issue in his thumb.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter broke the news that Love will have to go under the knife. Fortunately, the procedure is believed to be minor, and he shouldn't be out for long.

Jordan Love to undergo surgery

"Packers QB Jordan Love, who is undergoing a procedure on a ligament issue with his left thumb, suffered the injury in Green Bay’s preseason opener," wrote Schefter. "The team is hoping Love can return to practice next week, and the Packers expect him to be ready for the regular-season opener."

Love reportedly tried to play through the injury, and he didn't look limited in the two drives he played in the preseason opener vs. the New York Jets.

Head coach Matt LaFleur had already hinted at resting Love and the starters during Saturday's preseason clash with the Indianapolis Colts, and it's now hard to envision the quarterback suiting up again before the season opener.

Packers GM expects Jordan Love to be ready for the season opener

Even so, Packers GM Brian Gutekunst didn't seem to be too worried about Love's condition. He didn't hurt his throwing hand, so this shouldn't be a lingering issue:

"You guys saw him out there [at practice], certainly he was able to function," Gutekunst told the media, per ESPN.

"I don't foresee this affecting him long term," Gutekunst said when asked about whether Love would suit up for the season opener.

The Packers will kick the season off with a high-flying NFC North matchup with the Detroit Lions, and Malik Willis would get the nod in the unlikely event that Love is forced to miss some time.
