Several NFL trades were made this week, in part because the league reduced the number of roster cuts down to just one cut to 53 players before Week 1 and teams are attempting to jump the waiver wire to land a player on their radar, and the Packers could get in on the action.
Wide receiver Romeo Doubs could be a potential trade chip, and the Packers could go shopping for cornerback help, given the lack of depth at the position since releasing Jaire Alexander earlier this summer, but Doubs is n’t the only starter who could be on the move for Green Bay.
If the Packers are intent on playing former first-round draft choice Jordan Morgan, offensive tackle Rasheed Walker could be expendable.
“The rest of the depth chart also makes Walker more expendable,” Jon Meerdink writes for SBNation . “Than a tackle who’s started 32 games over the past two seasons normally would be. Zach Tom has right tackle locked up for the foreseeable future, and between Morgan and 2025 second round pick Anthony Belton, the Packers have plenty of depth at tackle for this season and beyond.
“That makes Walker a decent trade candidate, especially since he, too, is a beneficiary of the Proven Performance escalator. The Packers could free up nearly around $3.4 million in space by moving his contract. Walker may still be well-regarded in Green Bay, but thinking about the future puts his present in some doubt.”
Walker, 25, still has plenty of upside from here after only allowing three sacks last season, and could see a robust market as teams look to both solidify their starting offensive line and add tackle depth.
In Green Bay, Walker is in the unique position of likely looking over his shoulder for the point in time the Packers believe Morgan is ready to step in and play at a high level, but could be starting caliber player elsewhere.
Whether the Packers are able to ship Walker off for draft capital or a young cornerback to compete for meaningful snaps in the secondary remains to be seen, but there is a case to be made for pulling off a trade to add depth elsewhere.
