The NFL didn't choose the Green Bay Packers-Detroit Lions matchup as a primetime game in Week 1, but it will be pretty much treated as such by CBS. Because the game it's in the late window, starting at 3:25 p.m CT, most of the country will be able to watch it for free.
The only other CBS game in the late window is Houston Texans at Los Angeles Rams. And CBS made sure to show which game is more important by selecting its primary broadcast team to call the game. It will be Jim Nantz on play-by-play and Tony Romo as the color analyst.
The website 506 Sports shared the broadcast map for the week, with the red being the Packers-Lions game throughout the country.
Next week, the Packers play on Thursday night against the Washington Commanders, so the game will be broadcasted nationally by Prime Video.
This year, Green Bay is slated to have four primetime games: Week 2 vs the Commanders (TNF), Week 4 at the Dallas Cowboys (SNF), Week 8 at the Pittsburgh Steelers (SNF) , Week 10 vs the Philadelphia Eagles (MNF). The second Packers-Lions game, at Ford Field, will be a standalone game on Thanksgiving on Fox.
Over the past few years, the NFL has cross-scheduled some games between Fox and CBS. Before that, NFC Sunday afternoon games were always on Fox, and CBS would only broadcast Packers games when they hosted an AFC opponent at Lambeau Field. Still, for divisional games, Fox has the rights to broadcast at least one of each NFC matchups, while the league can move the other one around to CBS or primetime.
This is the first time the Packers will open the regular season at Lambeau Field since 2018, when Mike McCarthy was still the team's head coach.
