Panthers' Mike Jackson Gives Ominous Hint About Future

The Carolina Panthers have plenty of talent in their secondary. Jaycee Horn is one of the best corners in the league, and safety Tre'von Moehrig had a great first season with the team in 2025.

One of the more underrated members of the defense, though, is cornerback Mike Jackson. The Panthers traded for Jackson ahead of the 2024 season, and he's been everything the team hoped for in more.

Jackson has started in every game for the Panthers since being acquired, and 2025 was the best season of his career. As a result, the veteran is due for a big raise on his next contract, but his latest comments indicate that may not come from Carolina.

Mike Jackson Non-Committal on Panthers' Future

Jackson is set to be a free agent after the 2026 season. If he plays similar to how he did in 2025, he'll undoubtedly be one of the most in-demand free agents.

However, according to The Athletic's Joe Person, Jackson and the Panthers have not held extension talks this summer. Jackson also offered some cryptic comments about his future.

“My job is just to come play ball,” Jackson said when speaking about his financial situation. “I’m on the tip of the iceberg, but I’m so far away… If I do what I’m supposed to, regardless, the money gonna come, no matter where it’s at.”

The last part of that statement is the most interesting. Jackson saying, "no matter where it's at," indicates he's not going to lose any sleep if Carolina isn't the team to offer him the most money. This could just be a negotiating tactic, or it could signal that Jackson doesn't believe an extension is coming.

The Panthers already have one highly paid corner in Horn, so they may be hesitant to invest in Jackson, especially considering he'll soon turn 30.

Jackson was very good in 2025, though, so he would be a big loss. The corner earned an elite 79.1 Pro Football Focus grade in 2025, which ranked 4th out of 114 qualified corners. Jackson collected 68 tackles, four interceptions, and a league-leading 19 pass breakups.

It would be nice to keep the Horn and Jackson duo together for a few more seasons, but the Panthers also have rookie Will Lee III waiting in the wings. If Lee impresses as a rookie, the Panthers will probably be more comfortable letting Jackson walk next offseason.
