On one of the biggest nights of his career in sports media, Pat McAfee took a moment to address a situation involving his show and a rumor that spread out of control.
During the NFL Combine, McAfee shared an unfounded rumor about student at Ole Miss. That student has reported harassment and abuse as a result of the rumor, and reportedly plans to take legal action against McAfee.
“I would like people to be held accountable for what they’ve done,” the student, Mary Kate Cornett, said in an interview with The Athletic.
“You’re ruining my life by talking about it on your show for nothing but attention, but here I am staying up until 5 in the morning, every night, throwing up, not eating because I’m so anxious about what’s going to happen for the rest of my life.”
During Wednesday's “Big Night AHT with Pat McAfee and Friends” at PPG Paints Arena in his hometown of Pittsburgh, McAfee indirectly addressed the controversy.
“I’m cool with Brett [Favre], just like the current situation that is happening where I have a lot of people saying that I should be sued,” McAfee said on Wednesday night.
“I want to say this – I never, ever want to be a part of anything negative in anybody’s life. Ever. That is not what I want to do."
McAfee acknowledged that his lawyers were in the building on Wednesday night, and said that they have the same mindset that he does - one of "empathy, but understanding reality."
“And for that whole thing that’s happening, I didn’t want to add any more negativity as it was taking place like I did," McAfee continued.
"We will try to figure that out and make some sort of silver lining in a very terrible situation. You can have that promise from me. It won’t be as impossible to be a fan of mine going forward.”
The situation with Cornett is not the first time that McAfee has caused controversy with his show. As he mentioned, Brett Favre sued him for comments made amid Favre's Mississippi fraud case. McAfee was also involved in a war of words between Aaron Rodgers and Jimmy Kimmel, as well as comments about ESPN executives.
We'll see what comes of the anticipated legal action from Cornett and her family, and how McAfee responds.
