While the Philadelphia Eagles begin their Super Bowl title defense on Thursday, the Kansas City Chiefs will head to Brazil against the LA Chargers on Friday to start defending their AFC conference crown once again. If all goes well, star QB Patrick Mahomes will end the night with two more impressive records for his stellar Hall-of-Fame résumé.
According to ProFootballTalk, Mahomes is currently primed to break the NFL records for most touchdown passes in a player's first nine seasons AND the most touchdown passes in the regular season for a player before they turn 30.
The former record is currently held by Peyton Manning with 293 (regular and postseason). Mahomes has 291, and thus needs only two touchdowns against the Chargers to tie it and three to break it. Barring something catastrophic, he'll surpass the record at some point this season even if the Chargers defense holds him in check.
The former has Mahomes tied with Hall of Famer Dan Marino at 245. Breaking that one could be slightly more challenging since Mahomes celebrates his 30th birthday on September 17. Mahomes only has two games - Friday against the Chargers and Week 2 against the Philadelphia Eagles - to break that record. That said, it would be quite surprising if he doesn't break that one first.
Patrick Mahomes has already compiled a Hall-of-Fame résumé: three Super Bowl titles (LIV, LVII, LVIII), three Super Bowl MVPs, two NFL MVPs (2018, 2022), AP Offensive Player of the Year (2018), multiple All-Pro nods, and a string of Pro Bowls. He also became the first player of the 21st century to win league MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season (2022), then led Kansas City to an overtime win in Super Bowl LVIII to repeat as champions.
Stat-wise, Mahomes owns several NFL records—including career passing yards per game and the fastest climbs to 10k, 25k and 30k passing yards—while also leading the league in passing TDs (2018, 2022) and yards (2022). Even with a bid for an unprecedented three-peat halted by Philadelphia in Super Bowl LIX, his blend of production, clutch comebacks, and postseason hardware keeps him very much in line to keep chasing Tom Brady's once-untouchable postseason records.
