Patrick Mahomes' dad explains viral cigar moment after AFC Championship Game

Patrick Mahomes Sr. has addressed what became a viral moment involving the lighting of a cigar after the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship Game.

The father of Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes told Bob Nightengale of USA Today he was "angry and annoyed" after Bengals players referred to Arrowhead Stadium as "Burrowhead" and after Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval jokingly requested that Joe Burrow "take a paternity test to confirm whether or not he's" Mahomes' real dad.

"I wanted to get the last laugh, so I told Patrick and a couple of our friends that I was going to bring a cigar to Kansas City," Mahomes Sr. explained. "And when they won, I told Patrick I was going to light it right up, and smoke it."

The not-safe-for-work video featuring Mahomes Sr. enjoying his victory cigar was fittingly tagged at "Burrowhead" stadium. He encouraged his famous son to get in on the fun but also knew better.

"That’s just not him," Mahomes Sr. said of the one-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player. "I had my friends do the same thing, too, it just wasn’t recorded and shown all over TV."

Mahomes Sr. is set to attend this Sunday's Super Bowl LVII showdown between his son's Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

The Eagles haven't yet gone so far as to troll the Mahomes family by calling the home of the Arizona Cardinals "Hurtsville" in honor of Philadelphia star signal-caller Jalen Hurts.

Nevertheless, Mahomes Sr. plans to bring something special with him for Sunday night just in case.

"I’ve got a guy who’s going to make boxes of cigars for me to bring to all of the Chiefs," he told Nightengale. "So, I’ll be sure to have mine. Believe me, I’ll be ready to light it up."
