The Kansas City Chiefs escaped with a tight, 30-27 win against the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. After entering the second half with a 20-9 lead, the Chiefs struggled to close the game out.

After the Panthers tied the game up with just under two minutes remaining, the Chiefs' offense was able to drive down the field and set up a 31-yard game-winning field goal for kicker Spencer Schrader, who was playing in just his second game with Kansas City.

The biggest play on the game-winning drive came from Patrick Mahomes, who scrambled for a massive 33-yard run to put the Chiefs in field goal range just outside the red zone.

After the win, Mahomes spoke about his situational awareness and how he's consistently able to make plays in the clutch.

"I think it's just certain times in games," Mahomes said. "It's not like I pre-plan that type of stuff. It's just, whenever it comes down to it and you've got to make the play, I feel like I try to go out there and make the play. That's why I feel like it happens later in games sometimes and in the playoffs.

"You don't want to slide, you have to kind of put your body out there knowing that you can take hits and stuff like that, but we've been able to make some big runs in some big moments."

After he struggled against Buffalo, Mahomes had a strong game, finishing with 329 total yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
